The problem with being a good cop sometimes was that good cops made enemies. A lot of them, if they tried hard enough. And their team? Well, they'd sent a lot of people to jail. Hell, Aya got bonus enemies by working with the vice guys. There was really no telling, day to day, who had gotten out or who had violent friends on the outside...

It was a perfectly normal afternoon at the precinct. Sure, there'd been the usual influx of threatening letters, and someone had broken into Danny's car the week before but really, that was nothing to worry about. They even got off at a decent hour, six o'clock and Aya was following Danny down the precinct steps.

Nope, normal day in mid-June. The only abnormal thing about it was the '93 Chevie Caprice that turned a corner gunned up to double the speed limit as they were crossing the street. Aya had never liked Chevies. It was all so damn fast, neither one one of them really had time to think...only react. Aya was throwing Danny clear, back at the concrete steps, about the time she felt the bumper crack her knee.

Couldn't think about that. Rolling was a good idea right?

Well, she lived.

The medics told her she was as she came to in the hospital. Cracked knee, hip dislocation, several cracked ribs and a glorious concussion. Well, that was fun. Danny was fit to burst with anger, that weird vein throbbing in his temple. Hell, half the words about throwing old men around and playing tag with speeding cars were going right over her little pain killer hazed head. She waited for a halt in the tirade before she interjected "...so...m'not goin to dinner tonight?"

That made Danny blink. Then the yelling started again at a higher volume. The uniform guarding the door was working real hard to pretend he didn't hear the yelling.

"Eating rookies and letting them adjust and kick their way out again or get eaten." It was like survival of the fittest! For cops!

Poor rookie.

"Gah, what could they give me that increases appetite like this? Pain meds are suppose to suppress! I want to file a complaint with the drug board."

"When I'm healing, I eat even more than usual." Dilan offered, "I wish I had my lab, though."

"Yeah...I'm not katzu." She stuck her tongue out toward the front seat and went back to dangling her fingers for Cat. "And I'm kinda shocked you don't have a traveling lab."

"Controlled chemicals." Dilan said in the vague tone of voice that meant you don't have anything regarding the clearance, love. "And such."

"So...someone else vetoed a pocket lab." That was what she got out of it! "Poor you. I'll see what I can swing for Christmas!"

"I could take samples, if," he turned to the driver, "you'd be so kind as to stop at my lab later?"

"I am under orders to take you straight there then go out on a two week training stint out of state. Sorry." The rookie shrugged. "It keeps anyone from capturing me and making met talk or such."

"I will give samples though."

"Hmmm. If I rewire the refrigerator..." Dilan zoned out into technical thoughts about how to turn the refrigerator into a lab quality one.

"...it has to be safe to hand over later dear." Just saying. "And still only use enough power that the force can afford to keep the lights on."

"Mmmm." he waved one hand in a vague circle, "I can lower the electricity usage after I hit a hardware store."

"I"ll call the chief at some point, let him know about the upgrade." Wait, he probably wouldn't stop with just a fridge would he? "Upgrades."

"Thanks, sweetie." Dilan said, followed by the potentially ominous; "I wonder if there's a basement. I could do a lot with a basement."

"It's possible. What would you do with a basement?" HE HAD HER FULL ATTENTION. "Would I be afraid of the basement?"

"Not as long as you kept your dressing covered." he mumbled, "Might be able to (technomagibabble)..."

"Dear, if an open wound could be a problem, it probable isn't safe to hand over to the next people that need to hide." Calm, rational voice now!

"It'll be fine by the time I'm gone." Dilan said with a blink over his shoulder at her, "But I could get some work done!"

"Yeah, see, reassuring you're not right now." She reached forward to poke his shoulder. "But if you can refit the basement so you don't go crazy, I say go for it?"

"I can." Dilan said, "Although, honestly, I'm already crazy."

"Yes, but I love the current crazy. Unoccupied crazy may be far less attractive and I don't want to risk it."

"...Also, that many cleaning chemicals wouldn't be good for either of us."

A pause, then,

"Kid, you're running over the speed limit."

"Agreed. Also? Injured back here without proper seat belting!"

The driver flushed and slowed down. "Sorry...thought we had a tail." Totally a tail. Um. Help?

Dilan's deep, rolling laugh filled the car, and then he settled into quiet for the rest of the ride.

Hmmm, that was normal enough to make her smile and relax back against Cat's carrier properly. Yep, dozing until they got there! It was...a quiet neighborhood with bog, fenced yards and one story homes, so, probably basements so there was more room for the families that the yards implied.

The rookie, in street clothes, hopped out to open a door for Aya, then eyed Dilan. "Who might recognize you? Should we...put a hat on you?"

Dilan eyed the rookie back and said, "Don't worry about it. I have green contacts and a base makeup to darken my skin to full-blood colour. I can also pull off a Katzu accent. We're going to be vacationers."

"Ah..." Okay, he had planned better than the rookie! "Good. Can you put it ion in the car? Um, or shuffle inside under bags? Don't want neighbors getting a good look at you is all...I can carry Aya I guess? She...fell asleep in the car?" FOR THE COVER STORY!
