The problem with being a good cop sometimes was that good cops made enemies. A lot of them, if they tried hard enough. And their team? Well, they'd sent a lot of people to jail. Hell, Aya got bonus enemies by working with the vice guys. There was really no telling, day to day, who had gotten out or who had violent friends on the outside...

It was a perfectly normal afternoon at the precinct. Sure, there'd been the usual influx of threatening letters, and someone had broken into Danny's car the week before but really, that was nothing to worry about. They even got off at a decent hour, six o'clock and Aya was following Danny down the precinct steps.

Nope, normal day in mid-June. The only abnormal thing about it was the '93 Chevie Caprice that turned a corner gunned up to double the speed limit as they were crossing the street. Aya had never liked Chevies. It was all so damn fast, neither one one of them really had time to think...only react. Aya was throwing Danny clear, back at the concrete steps, about the time she felt the bumper crack her knee.

Couldn't think about that. Rolling was a good idea right?

Well, she lived.

The medics told her she was as she came to in the hospital. Cracked knee, hip dislocation, several cracked ribs and a glorious concussion. Well, that was fun. Danny was fit to burst with anger, that weird vein throbbing in his temple. Hell, half the words about throwing old men around and playing tag with speeding cars were going right over her little pain killer hazed head. She waited for a halt in the tirade before she interjected "...so...m'not goin to dinner tonight?"

That made Danny blink. Then the yelling started again at a higher volume. The uniform guarding the door was working real hard to pretend he didn't hear the yelling.

"Then we get you her files." the Chief decided, getting up to go find the doctor.

Ben looked at Dilan, then at his dad before shrugging "I don't know, are we allowed to? He's not a cop. I think this is a cop thing..." Danny nodded "It'll be hard to justify taking a civilian with us that isn't directly threatened but..."

"He's got a masters in child psychology and a teaching certificate." Dilan offers, "He can home-school Ben until it's cleared up."

"I'm only taking summer stuff now..." Ben started, a little huffy that anyone was thinking about school right now but...

"But real school starts in two weeks and I know we don't have any court dates before then. It's gotta be someone we're suppose to testify against." Danny sighed. "I'll talk to Braig. He and Al decided to wait down the hall. Only the badges let us all cram in one room."

"Yeah." Dilan says, dismissing them from his mind as he gets the charts, frowning and muttering to himself.

Well, as far as the charts went, Aya'd had worse logged in her medical records? There were already squiggled notes in the margins, questioning the initial severity. Concussion, yes, a bad concussion. They were waiting on the swelling to go down in her leg slightly before they decided if surgery was necessary on the knee...

Dilan, ever so tenderly, checks out her knee, "Another couple of hours and I can take her away." he says quietly, coming out of his chart involved funk.

The knee hurt, and even tender observations made her whimper slightly but...well, that was just the way things were right now. It did draw her out of the drug haze again though, and she smiled to hear they could leave soon.

She hated hospitals.

"I'll arrange a driver then." the Chief sighed, pulling out a disposable cell phone and passing it to Dilan. "Anything you absolutely need from your place?"

"Thank you." Dilan pauses, "Cat, and the red suitcase. It's in the closet next to the door." he smiles, wryly, "Ansem has a bad habit of telling me that I need to be on an airplane in two hours. So I just started keeping a weeks worth of clothing packed."

"Apartment keys." The chief held out his hand for them, then nodded to Aya "And we'll get her changes from the precinct lockers. No one is going near her apartment."

Danny had been outfitted from the same. And Ben's small bag had been filled at K-mart. "I don't think I have to tell you not to say locations over the phone when talking to you coworkers, but, well, be careful. One of the detectives will be by with your things."

Dilan puts them in the chief's hand and says, "Braig's suitcase is the blue one. I've got as much leave as Braig does, it'll be fine."

"We appreciate it, Dilan." the Chief admitted. They were on the very short list of trusted civilians, Braig and Dilan. "I'll get you information to a safe place to go after leaving here. if you go beyond that though...take the phone."

"She's my girlfriend." Dilan says simply, "I'll keep you updated."

Ben and Danny both came over to touch Aya's hand in goodbye, the Chief nodded, and the trio left. "...this s'the first time this's happened." aya sighed softly when they were gone. "Promise."

"Shh, babe." Dilan says, petting her hair gently, "Shhh. Just recover, we can talk later. Love you."

"'kay" they took her for more x-rays in a few hours, since the swelling had gone down some by then. The uniform paced the bed and took up guarding the X-ray doors as a matter of course. Obviously the initial X-rays had been botched. No surgery necessary.

A brace, ice and heat in the next week at least, pain killers, and staying down were prescribed for that. The concussion was worrying still, but time and diligence would take care of it, same for the tightly wrapped ribs, as long as she refrained from being hit again.

Amazingly, the doctor was willing to release her, despite initial estimates of a prolonged stay...

...sometimes Aya felt bad about confusing doctors.

"Want me to carry you to the car, babe? We've got a uniform driver." his hands are gentle when he pushes her hair back.

Aya took a moment to think about what the doctors would say about her being carted around, but really, it boiled down to wanting to be carried. So, she held her arms up to Dilan and smiled "Yes please?"

The uniform insisted on leading them to the doctor's parking area, and draping a blanket over Aya before they actually ventured out, but they made it to the sedan without incident. Aya had...no idea where they were going, so she just tried to hold still, not jostle injuries, and relax?

Dilan made her as comfortable as possible, and shoved Cat's carrier closer to Aya so that they can comfort each other. Cat doesn't really like being in the carrier.

"Want me to sit back here with you, love?"

Cat's carrier made a good brace to lean against, and she could wiggle her fingers through the mesh in front! They spent several moments assuring each other everything was okay. "There's no leg room back here..." she admitted at last. "And I'm probably going to fall asleep again..."

"Fair enough." Dilan nodded and settled into the passenger seat. "Is there anything you need before we get to the safe house?"

She tilted her head to the side, winced, then straightened her head. "...pain killers are wearing off. Swore they said a few more hours." Grumble, grumble, grumble. Sometimes life just worked like that. "And...m'hungry. Really hungry. I don't think hospital food is very nutritious." Because they had fed her. They really had! She shouldn't be this hungry still.

"Drive through?" he asked the driver, who shook his head;

"No can do, sorry. There should be groceries at the safe house, though."

"Mmmph." Not a happy Dilan noise, but better safe than sorry, "I've got some jerky with me, and I'll cook as soon as we're there." he said as he passed the packet of dried meat back to her.

Siiggghhhh said Aya.

MEAT! said her body.

Body trumped all right now! "You're a life saver dear. I think my stomach had been seriously contemplating my spine..." This was noted after she'd eaten several strips and fed tidbits to Cat.

At least it was a Dilan-sized snack? It should hold her fora little bit. Dilan started going over quick, high-protein recipes in his mind so that he could start as soon as he knew what he had to work with. Toss raw vegetables at her first, to hold her over while he cooked...

Cat meer'ed at the jerky and rubbed up against Aya's fingers before eating each little tidbit.

Aya was very grateful for large bags of jerky! It prevented her from something silly, like chewing on her own arm or something. Or him. Or the driver.

She could totally eat the driver. He looked small.

Apparently she could look rather feral while just sitting in the backseat and petting a cat?
