...Aaron. Again.
Oct. 13th, 2012 12:41 amAya grinned as she bopped out of the post office. Yes, she'd been dating the boys, both boys, for about a month now and nothing had fallen apart. Her life was surprisingly...nice. They'd headed in for an extended lab period last week and she'd taken up mailing them pictures again.
Pictures of Cat with cut out letters and such. Today's piece had the little fuzzball curled up asleep in Aya's bra on the bathroom counter while Aya brushed her teeth after her shower (seen in mirror!). She'd barely had the heart to shift the cat when it came time to get dressed for work! The simple statement 'Wish you were here' was on the back and the whole picture sent off with the admonition that they were to open it together at lunch. It was important they eat together if possible!
That and Aya had only sent one picture so...
Anyway, coffee, and a full day at the office. A few meetings, and she was scheduled to meet with a contractor. The town council had finally decided to update a lot of the buildings (Sheriff's office among them) and the low bidder for the project had been approved last meeting. For some reason the company head wanted to start with her precinct and had scheduled personal meetings with her every other day for the next few weeks.
Granted, she knew her input was important, but the meetings were literally the last time slots she ever allowed scheduling because those times had the nasty habit of running through the 'dinner' hour and she needed to eat.
Still, she wasn't too fussed. An updated building would be worth a headache or three and she went to work smiling. Nothing was ever perfect though, reports got lost, there were incidents with tourists she had to settle, and somehow she managed to be late to her first meeting.
The company director had rented a house near the beach and an office for the duration of his project, and she half-ran up the stairs to the third floor to make it through the door only fifteen minutes late. "Sorry, sorry, got caught up. Hazard of being sheriff." she apologized as she came through the door.
The man standing with the aid of a cane by the large desk offered a chilly smile in her direction. "Ah, yes, you're quite busy these days I hear. Sit down Sheriff, we need to talk about your building."
Oh. Oh she knew this man. Aya blinked and stared at Aaron for several moments before sitting down and hoping she hadn't lost all her cool by staring. What was he doing here?! The sheer fact that Aaron was standing in her town at all made her grit her mental teeth. "What happened to the law degree?"
"Ah, I got that and a degree in structural engineering, it helps to run the company."
Where he got a company Aya didn't know but she was going to...do her best to be professional. "I see. Glad to see you've done well. What do you need to know?"
"Tonight?" he mused, leaning against the desk and running fingers along his chin thoughtfully. "Tonight, nothing really. I just needed to see who I'd be working with." That last played so false that she knew he had known she was sheriff long before this meeting.
Wonderful. "Sheriff Aya Brea," she listed calmly, for his benefit...and her own. It helped to give her a support against the unexpected blast from her past. She wanted to give her people a good new building and this was how it was going to happen. She managed three civil, vaguely useful meetings before seeing the blocked out sections of her coming weeks started to really get to her.
And Aaron didn't help with the depression. Not at all. He eyed her like he'd always eyed her, half lusty, half amused. And she wasn't ketting it get to her. She was staying calm, staying cool. She hadn't even told the boys when they called, though she probably seemed a bit distracted. She didn't want them...angry. She still had suspicions about what the boys may have done to or near Aaron the first time and she didn't want them to be that angry ever again. During the fourth meeting came the words she'd been expecting since she saw him again though. "Stay for dinner, Aya."
"Taken." Clipped, cool, uninterested. Right?
"Ah, yes, I'd heard that too." He smiled that lazy, amused smirk and twirled his cane a little in his hands. "The brothers, right? The ones you were so proud of?"
Still so proud of. "Yes."
"I have to hand it to you, Aya, that is the most twisted sympathy fuck I've ever heard. And trust me, I've become something of an expert in sympathy sex since we last met."
He couldn't have hurt her more if he'd stabbed her really. She just stared at him for a moment then shrugged. "Not the way I see it."
"I know, you were always good at that." Self delusion. Thinking she was worthwhile and actually entertaining. All of it was there in the silence after those words.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. "They're good for me." Why was she trying to justify herself and her choices to this guy?! Why?! Was it because she suspected why he walked with that cane now?
"I'm quite sure they are, family is suppose to be after all. Even ones like them. How many do you share with right now? I know you were always touchy about...sharing. You know you can talk to me if you're stressed."
"It'll be a cold day in Hell, Aaron."
"Ah, of course. See you day after tomorrow then."
Aya walked, cool and calm, alllll the way to Pierce's house after that. She...shouldn't be alone. Not when she was angry, and sick, and knowing that maybe, just maybe he was right and the boys were just...
...just...
...that worried about her.
Fuck.
It was Braig's phone that rang somewhere around four in the morning, Pierce's number showing in the display. "Pick up dude, pick up pick up pick up..."
