Aya shifted her head on the desk just far enough so she could see the clock. Eleven is what the numbers told her. Five hours after she was suppose to be home. After she was suppose to be home and...and...entertaining? That was a good word for it. Even her mind was shying away from the reality of dating Dilan.

And here she was standing him up.

Of course, he had a key to her place, always had but...she was suppose to be home. It didn't matter that she knew, logically, that he could make himself comfortable regardless just...gah.

She was going to put a dent in her desk with all the head thumping she did. "Just...call him Brea." she muttered at herself, ignoring the pointed looks the deputies were shooting her through the open door. "Call him and explain." and hope he didn't...high tail it? Give up? Come to his senses?

Fuck.

This? Was going to hurt. Somehow, some way..it was just going to. She knew it, because her dating luck trumped his and...and...

...and she needed to call him.

She didn't bother looking at the keypad, just dialed his cell by heart and laid the receiver next to her ear on the desk. "Ummm, so, that Dalton/Harris feud escalated this evening..." she began the moment she heard his end click on. Best to spit it out right?

Well, they could go to trial together.

"Well, anything good left?" Aya called when she heard him come in the door. "Or are we scraping the dregs of Friday night movie rentals?"

"We're doing okay." he says with a small smile, "Got some of our favourites, and some new releases."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Alright! The Haunting!" she cheered for the old favorites category. "What's on the chopping block for new?" she leaned out of the kitchen doorway to grin at him.

What? Acting normal was a lot better than other options right? "Oh, green beans or salad?"

He lists a collection of names and drops them next to the DVD player before crashing on the couch. "Salad, I think."

"Okay, it's official, I'm out of the entertainment loop." she sighed and ducked back into the kitchen. "I haven't heard of any of those. Hmmm, salad's going to be 'whatever is choppable in the fridge'." she warned.

"That makes two of us." he admits, "And I don't mind, you've usually got interesting things."

[mitochondriaaya]

"What, the interns don't have the lab tv's going on the movie minutes anymore? Man, we're doomed." she laughed. "Sorry to disappoint but I'm pretty sure none of my things in the fridge are going to try to bite this time..."

[sliceitwithwind]

"Nope. We're in crunch. Have been for the last two years, remember?" It's been CRAZY, "And I do prefer foods that I don't have to chase around the kitchen. Forest, yes, kitchen, no.

[mitochondriaaya]

"Oh right, the background noise now is NPR right?" she teased. "I still have no idea how a bird got in my fridge. I'm inclined to blame Braig." despite all evidence!

"Fruit or no fruit with the salad? I have apples, grapes, and a bit of pineapple."

[sliceitwithwind]

"The background noise is panicked screaming from other branches." he says with a sigh, "And it probably was...ooo, fruit. Totally fruit. This is a date, right?"

[mitochondriaaya]

"You need to get out of there more; I'm going to have start showing up randomly again aren't I?" she tossed a grape in his direction from the kitchen and started in on the salad-thing. "Yeah...it's a date. Low-key comfy date?" because that was what they could handle!

"Wait, you vouched for him remember? Said you guys were at the store the whole time!"

"We were at the store. That doesn't mean he didn't manage it anyway. Somehow." He catches the grape in his mouth and crunches it happily, "Eh, probably not a good idea. You don't have high enough clearance."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Probably bribed one of the local kids." she grumbled, tossing another fruit bit his way. "It's stepped up that much now? They let me back to your office what was it, a few months back?"

[sliceitwithwind]

"Yeah, it has. I'm sorry, it's...yeah. This may be our only date for a while." he's...really unhappy about that, to be honest, "But I'll do my best to come by for dinner once a week or so."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Anything you can talk about?" she'd listen, if he wanted her to. "Get in here, sit at the table so I can quit craning my neck around." she was more than a little worried, not about the dating thing because there were worse reasons for gaps in dating, but for him and Braig.

[sliceitwithwind]

"Nope." simply, "Not a damn thing I'm allowed to talk about right now." He shifts into the kitchen and leans on the counter.

[mitochondriaaya]

"Well...I'll just have to keep sending you letters then." Daily Cat ransom letters. And she'd probably start sending surfboard ransom letters to Braig too.

"Kitten, you're blocking the knife drawer." the one utensil she still needed to finish the salad, so of course that was where he'd lean.

"of course I am." he says after a second, shifting out of her way and settling at the table instead. "I'm a cat. We do that. Sorry."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Don't worry, it's a very lovable trait." She poked his side as he passed, then passed him a knife as well so he could help chop. "And you don't get underfoot and give me heart attacks so..."

"Well, no. That's Cat's job." he grins at her and obediently helps with the salad.

[mitochondriaaya]

"And she's very diligent in her work." Aya laughed "She's going to manage to break my leg, you watch!"

[sliceitwithwind]

"Nah. We already did broken legs...she'll break your arm."

[mitochondriaaya]

"...if your Cat breaks my arm I'm going to kick you." she informed him after a moment of thought. "I really don't want to go through the whole cast thing again."

"That's fair." he laughs a little and chops salad, "You'll take care of her while I'm busy, right?"

Salad tonight consisted of mostly choppable things and a light, decorative garnish of lettuce? Most of it had gone on her sandwiches this week. "We'll take care of each other. We both rattle around too much when we're alone in big empty houses for long." she promised. "I'll spoil her properly with no curfew and the ability to throw wild parties and things."
