The little bitty waves

The elastic strap was suppose to go around her ankle. Of course, the board she'd gotten hadn't exactly come with instructions (that she saw anyway), so she had it kinda tucked in the shoulder strap of her swimsuit. She couldn't find her flip-flops, but she did remember sunblock! That as the important part right?

The boys had promised to teach her how to surf! Or wake surf...or wade, or something. She could swim a little, and she didn't think they'd be going very deep, but this was her first time to the beach that wasn't poking at tide pools. She felt kinda...grown up.

Yep, very grown up with a board almost as big as she was.

"I'll show you when we get off." he promises. Although in this case it's more I'll make Dilan show you.

"Okay!" Until then she was going to assume Braig would tell her if she was kicking the dolphin in the ear! Back to giggling? With the occasional 'You can beat him, giddyup!' to their ride.

The dolphin giggled and chattered along with Aya's enthusiasm, and then got into a race with an orange dolphin that took them in a giant loop around the rest of the pod.

Dilan, meanwhile, was back in shallower water looking at some of the dolphins who had minor bumps and bruises and using little bits of healing magic on them.

"Whoa...Dilan is a dolphin doctor?" Aya asked when they circled close enough for a good view of what was going on. "Coooool. Like a vet! Do you do that too Braig?" For the record, dolphins were much cooler than looking after a class pet or something.

"Dilan'll heal anything that asks." Braig says with pride, "Even if he's not supposed to. Nah, I'm not as good as he is with delicate things. I can do people pretty well, but I don't know as much about animals. Kind of like he doesn't make plans, and you don't do science."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Hey, I did my homework!" She did! It was science homework! About seeds! Hers was an orange seed. She liked oranges! "I even watered it!" So there!

"Oh, so, he does dolphins and stuff, you do people? Why wouldn't you guys be supposed to?" Ah, six year old grammar was also fun?

"Sometimes. He does more healing than I do, he's better at it." Braig doesn't mind admitting that Dilan is better at some thing than he is. At least not to Aya, his mom and Lenna both tell him that it's important for little kids development to know that nobody is good at everything (even if he totally is, Dilan is just better). "We're not supposed to do magic outside of school. You won't be either, when you start learning magic."

"It's practice then? Can't you just say healing stuff is like homework then? So you don't get in trouble?" Ahhhh, yes, voluntary homework was the best kind? "You should practice more! Then you can both be the best and get prizes!" Like a school medal?

Or something.

"I wanna learn Moogle magic!"

"If you can learn Moogle magic it'll make you famous." Braig said with a grin, "Nobody but Moogles has ever managed to. And you'd think it could be like homework, but it's not."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Duh, we're all gonna be famous cause we already talk Moogle some and you guys are already healers and stuff right? And I'll learn to make stuff and blow stuff up like a Moogle! And you guys will be...my bodyguards?" Famous people had bodyguards right? FAMOUS BODYGUARDS!

"Huh. That's dumb. Can they like...suck all your magic out if they catch you or something?"

"Well, Dilan's famous just because he was born." Braig pointed out, "No, they'd just get really pissed off and we'd get in trouble."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Oh, right, but he can be MORE famous!" Because maybe he'd like it? "Oh, and you get grounded right and have to write lines or something? That stinks. What's magic detention like?"

[sliceitwithwind]

"You don't get to do any of the fun stuff and you have to do lots of extra reports." He thought about it for a moment, "Dilan doesn't mind reports, though. And actually I like them. So mostly it's just that you don't get to use magic at all."

[mitochondriaaya]

She was now staaaaaaaring at him. Staring! "You guys are weird." Just saying. "Reports are hard."

[sliceitwithwind]

"No, we're geniuses." Braig said, keeping her on the dolphin, "For us it's kind of an excuse to show off how smart we are."

[mitochondriaaya]

"You do that by talking." They totally did. She didn't know anyone who talked like them back in New York. And if they could show it off by opening their mouths why write it all down???

That kinda wasted effort was...kinda dumb actually.

"Well, yeah." Shame? What's that? "But reports mean that the information is there for anyone to read, instead of just the people who were there at the time hearing it."

[mitochondriaaya]

Shame would totally go over her head anyway! "Oh, like a newspaper in the library?" Those were saved so people got to read them even when it wasn't the same week! "So you'd write a report so they can save it and then read it later, then learn that you're smart? And that's fun?"

"Yup! That's it. And it's fun for me." Dilan just liked to write. It was it's own reward.

[mitochondriaaya]

"...you guys are weird." She didn't say it like it was a bad thing though!

[sliceitwithwind]

"Yup. Love us or leave us." Braig was proud of her for saying it, a lot of kids say it in a bad way, Aya seems to be impressed. Impressed is good, so she gets a little squeeze of pleasure.

[mitochondriaaya]

"Love you guys. Duh. You're awesome!" Awesome like the dolphin. EEEEEEEEEEEEE. "We totally have the best dolphin. He's FAST!"

[sliceitwithwind]

"Yeah, I know." Braig agreed, "And he is."

The dolphin chortled at them and lept extra high.

[mitochondriaaya]

"You picked him on purpose cause he was fast? EEEEEEEEEHHHHHeeeeeheehhhheeeeeee!" Well, she kind of assumed the two statements were related, and...no longer about him? SIX YEAR OLDS MOVED ON FAST! "Awesome! He needs a medal! A gold medal!" The Olympics had been on recently.

"He's a dolphin, Aya, he has no need for a medal." Braig just...let it go.
