History: Aya Brea is the only surviving offspring of the nurse that escaped Japan and one of the four surviving recon team members. Brannig Brea married Himiko shortly after their escape from Japan and the declaration of war. They had twin daughters, Aya and Maya, in the late spring of 1981. Unlike many humans, neither the girls nor their mother grew ill after The Solution, though their father, Brannig, became sickly enough to bar him from continuing his military career. A year after The Solution, Maya and Himiko were trampled in one of the first food riots in California. Wracked with grief, Brannig left his remaining daughter with a neighbor and went into town with the intent of avenging his family. He was hung.
A week later Aya's godfather, Nevada, came into town to check on his friend. Left with no other option in his mind, he took the girl with him when he left. Aya grew up at his knee, always traveling. Nevada was a ranger for the west coast area, a man who was responsible for traveling between towns, looking for and reporting trouble, and for taking care of the stranger things that came up within his territory. Needless to say, toting around a five year old girl put a crimp in his traveling for a few months as he tried to decide what to do with her. Nevada was an incredibly paranoid individual, and given his experience in Japan he suspected that Aya's good health indicated mitochondrial activity, so he didn't trust anyone he knew to raise the girl properly. As a consequence Aya learned to shoot at a young age, providing backup from a safe distance.
For eleven years Aya was her uncle's partner, learning his route and how to deal with any manner of strange thing from cults in small towns to chaos beasts. She became a tough, paranoid little copy of her uncle, constantly wearing a hat low over her ears in case anyone noticed the remarkably healthy human and reported her to scientists that would take her away. That was the fear that Nevada drummed into her. Scientists would take her away if they knew about her mitochondrial abilities because he'd been on the recon team in Japan and he knew what had actually gone on. He knew, and he protected his goddaughter fiercely.
Nevada fell ill when Aya was sixteen, finally giving into his human nature as the world tore at him. As one of his last acts he decided on someone he kind of trusted enough to continue watching over Aya; a rancher that went by the name Momma Carridine. Nevada wasted away over the course of three months on the woman's ranch while the family there summarily adopted the paranoid sixteen year old. Aya continued with Nevada's ranger duties, making Momma's ranch her home base. It was there she learned about all those things a girl should know about, such as what goes on in Duty Towns (a place Nevada avoided at all costs), her first visit to such a place, and skirts. Sadly most of it didn't take and Aya sticks to her over-large duster coat and large hat ensemble when not at home, her usual gear even going so far as to disguise her gender to a degree.
The Org came out to the far west a year ago and Aya was not only uncovered as a mitochondrial, but recruited into full time ranger status under them. Now she does odd jobs for the Org when they need her in other areas as well as her ranger work along the West Coast.
