It started out fine...

She was fourteen when the area karate regionals came around. Never mind the fact that it was early December, and her mid-terms were coming up, and she was still trying to come to terms with her new breast size. Like an idiot she said she'd be there, layered on sports bras, and trotted to the gym.

The fights were simple exhibitions, points awarded on execution and touches rather than beating an opponent into the ground. In her third bout Aya was getting tired, and her opponent, a human from two towns over she'd met in the ring before, was as well. That was probably why things went wrong.

Three points in he flubbed a spin kick and his ankle buckled, making the attacking foot lash in an unexpected direction. She didn't get a block up in time and he tagged her hard on the ribs, taking them both to the floor. The referee blew his whistle, hard, halting all conversation as paramedics came forward to access injuries.

One cracked ankle on his side.

Two cracked ribs on hers.

They both managed to facepalm at the same time when it was announced they were unfit to continue. "Next year," they mouthed at each other around the pained wincing as they were bandaged.

"Of course," he allowed easily. "There aren't any chairs in there so you can even sit next to her on the table if you want alright?"

Dilan nodded, "Ten minutes, monkey-girl. Then we'll know if we need to take more."

"Okay, ten minutes, maybe more pictures. So, what are my insides like? Photogenic?" Yeah, she was assuming the film showed on a screen before physically appearing! It was magic behind that screen!

"No clue yet!" Dilan said, "It'll show when it's developed."

[mitochondriaaya]

"Ohhh, okay. You know...if I have a chest burster you have to promise to kill me before the world dies okay?" Best to cover these options! "And if there's a smiley face in my lungs...uhhh...I don't know. Let me think about that."

[sliceitwithwind]

"If you have a chest-burster I take over the surgery and get that bastard out of you, then use healing magic to keep you alive long enough to finish healing even though it'd hurt." Dilan objected.

[mitochondriaaya]

"Are you qualified for that?!" Aya squawked cheerfully. "If we're going to risk the planet you need to be certified I think!"

[sliceitwithwind]

"No." Dilan said cheerfully, "But I'm too big to be stopped."

[mitochondriaaya]

"My ribs feel very afraid now!" She giggled, coughed, and kept giggling. "Too big to be stopped?! My bonnnnnnnes!"

Dilan smiled, though he was still worried about the coughing.

[mitochondriaaya]

"Alright, the pictures are clear," the doctor called after a few more minutes. "Back to the room and we can see what we see."

Aya naturally held her arms out for more carrying. She was a spoiled girl yes!

Dilan picked her up, of course, and headed back to where Braig was pacing back and forth.

Aya grinned and held a hand out to Braig when they got back. "Dilan's going to operate if it's a chest burster." Just so he knew.

"Sadly for Dilan' medical debut I can't see an alien." The doctor noted, clipping her films to the x-ray board. "This line here though? See how you can see a vague cloudy patch inside it? That's a film in your lungs. Both actually, see, though smaller in the right. That is pneumonia girl, congratulations. I want to do some blood work. The fever suggest bacterial? But my instinct says viral."

"Looks like you get jabs." Dilan said wryly, "At least we know how to treat pneumonia."

Braig looked over at her wryly, "You just don't do anything by halves, do you babe?"

[mitochondriaaya]

"Dilan, I get jabs every time I worry you!" Aya tried to laugh it off really. Pneumonia was a scary word though. It really was. "And no, if I did things by halves I'd only end up in a mediocre standing. I'm too competitive for that."

That made the boys and the doctor laugh.

[mitochondriaaya]

"I'll have a nurse in here in just a moment to take some blood, then I want you three to stay here for about a half hour until I have some initial results alright? That way I know how to start treating you."

Aya nodded and coughed again. "This rate I'm gonna be sick until Dilan gets sick this year."

[sliceitwithwind]

"Awww, don't say that monkey." Dilan said, "You'll be up and running soon."

Braig just leaned over and grabbed her hand, giving it a squeeze.

[mitochondriaaya]

"Braig was sick forever when he had pneumonia!" Aya pointed out, squeezing said boy's hand. "It's a long thing!"

[sliceitwithwind]

"Yeah, but Braig gets sick more than anyone else."

"Dude, uncool. Mom and dad get sick just as often."

[mitochondriaaya]

"You have a normal immune system for an olia!" Aya soothed. "It just really did feel like forever. And the having to stay in bed thing..." ugh. A lot of trouble for some shadows on an x-ray!

":Oh, hey, I can see the cracks in my ribs!" She hadn't noticed that!

[sliceitwithwind]

"Yes, they're healing quite well." the doctor said, "Not as fast as you normally do, but quite well."

Dilan rubbed Aya's shoulder, "We'll keep you entertained, Ayay."

[mitochondriaaya]

The nurse came in then to take blood and Aya held still dutifully for it. "Oh right, you guys are out for winter break aren't you? Hah, you're all mine..." cough.

[sliceitwithwind]

"Yup." Braig agreed, "And not due back until Dilan has finished being sick, regardless of when that happens."

There were a couple of times it took until January for him to get ill.

No girlfriends, no parties, and a sick kid sister to take care of of? Ouch. "You're gonna go stir crazy," she pointed out.
