Who: Aya and Ben
When: Some time after the trio emerges from under cover work.
What: A fresh set of eyes can often be useful. Or incredibly embarrassing, one way or the other!
Ben flopped down on a boulder and stared at the ceiling a moment before lifting his head to glare at Aya, "You could have come," he noted.
"No," Aya sighed, hanging her keys and kicking her shoes off at the door. "I can't, I'm working on it, but until I'm your guardian I can't go to a parent teacher conference." She reached out to stroke a finger along Ben's cheek, worried.
"You brought me home," Ben countered. "We went to meet the teacher then I came out and YOU brought me home. That makes you my mom," in as much as anyone was his mom!
"I know baby," Aya sighed, sitting down beside his boulder, "I know. Your real mom is..."
"...a junkie," Ben finished for her. "My real mom is a junkie and you were my dad's partner. You care. She doesn't." She just cared about giving Aya hell over Ben. That was a messed up way to live and sometime he thought that she'd be better off if she didn't surface to fight over him!
"She cares," Aya winced, "she can't help but care." Some. That was what mom's did, right?
"The last time you sent her my tuition check instead of sending it straight to the school she blew it Aya. I know what she's like. When I broke my arm I called you." Even though she'd been undercover.
Way to slam that home Ben, he got points for the effective use of reality. "I know. That's why you're on my account and she isn't love. Come here?"
Ben eyed her a moment before wiggling over into her lap to cuddle. "I want to stay here forever Aya. I don't want to see her boyfriends or worry if she's infected or in a string now. I want to stay here and worry about you."
Aya couldn't help but laugh, tears in her voice as she kissed the top of his head. "I know baby. And it's...you shouldn't have to worry about the adults. That's my job you know."
"Yeah, well, you've got bigger worries woman!" Ben teased carefully. "You're honest, ish, in a world that isn't."
"You see far too damn much boy," Aya admitted. "Don't be a cop okay? This world is bad enough without boys like you being cops in a city like this."
"No way!" Ben laughed. "I'm gonna make video games! And live with you! And make sure you don't explode or anything."
"Explode?" she laughed. "You know that's not normal right?"
"Well, you're a mitochondrial right? You're an over-achiever!" Ben laughed and poked her nose. "you could explode if you really wanted to!"
"I don't want to explode Ben."
"I know, 'cause you gotta be here for me! And you have to adopt me right? And that means you have to have a stable living situation." Ben summed up.
"I have a stable living situation!" Aya argued. "I own this place!"
"YOU GOTTA BE MARRIED AYA!" Ben yelled, practically in her ear.
The...fuck? Aya hugged her boy close and sighed, "I'll work on it kiddo. I'll work on it. Not a lot of boys who can handle me you know." She kept hoping the state of New York would get over itself and realize what was right but...
Ben snorted and wrapped his arms around Aya "What about Braig and Dilan?"
...
...
...
"Sweetie...we were partnered for a really long case. They date each other." And hadn't called since the court case. She liked them both. She liked them both a lot, that didn't mean they needed a third wheel.
"So? They really like you!" Ben insisted! "They were both here! And Braig was on pain killers! I like them you know! They were fun!" They both played video games! Or close enough with the game programming as a hobby thing!
"Sweetie..." Aya sighed, wincing.
"Don't!" Ben snapped. "Don't. I know guys okay? Why don't you call them? We can make dinner!"
"...I did. They're....decompressing after being undercover love. They don't need reminders okay? One message is enough."
"Braig gave me his number," Ben admitted. "When he was here." On drugs.
"Don't bug him Ben, he's got quality time to..."
"I left messages."
Gifford. "Ben..."
"What? We can totally have a barbecue!"
...what did she say to that?" Yeah kiddo, we totally can. I miss them." she admitted. They...made her feel safe. She'd spent almost two years with them having her back. And more. She...
...
...they had each other. "I'm looking love, I promise."
"Okay." He'd take that. For now.
